They Live OnThey Live On

   Those we love remain with us
   For love itself lives on;

   Cherished memories never fade
   Because one loved is gone.

   Those we love can never be
   More than a thought apart;

   For as long as there’s a memory,
   They live on within our heart.

OBITUARY

Matt, a first generation American, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2024 at the Canyonlands Care Center in Moab, UT. He was born on August 17, 1920 in the small Italian borough of Lewis Run, Pennsylvania. His parents Josephine Benedict and Michele Langianese migrated from Italy in the early 1900s. His dad fought in WWI before returning back to the U.S. He and Josephine had six children with Matt being the oldest son and proudly known as the “padrone” (Italian for chief). He is survived by his younger sister Jeanne.

Matt served in WWII from 1942 through 1945. He also served in the Korean War. He was always dedicated to his country but rarely shared his experience of the war until he was in his eighty’s. He landed on Omaha beach on day 3 of D-day and continued through Europe on the front line including the Battle of the Bulge.  Eventually his unit was responsible for liberating several concentration camps and finally taking over the town of Friedberg Germany by the end of the war. He was a proud veteran. In 2020 the French Government knighted him with the Medal of Honor for his war efforts, which is that county’s highest honor.

He married Norma MacKenzie in 1948 and they had two daughters Michele and Joette. He and his family moved around the country to further his career, living in Alexandria, LA, Columbus, OH, and Pittsburgh, PA. He retired from Dresser Ideco in Beaumont,Texas. He and Norma enjoyed traveling the country visiting almost every state and national park. They frequently visited their daughter Joette in Utah and he did not hesitate to join her on many Wasatch Mountain hikes. After Norma’s death in 2001 he met his second love Elaine Turner. They were together until her death in 2014.

Matt was an avid golfer and played as often as he could until the age of 94 when his bad knee – that he claimed occurred during a football injury while he was in high school – would not allow him to follow through on his swing.  He also loved hiking in the mountains and exploring Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. At the age of 87 he had no problems hiking to Delicate Arch.  He showed his daughters the beauty of nature taking them on hikes in the Allegheny mountains as soon as they could walk.

Matt was a very independent man and refused Joette’s many suggestions to move to Utah. Finally, after a bad fall in his home he decided that Utah might a good idea. He moved to Moab, UT in 2018 and lived next door to Joette until he transitioned to the Canyonlands Care Center where he lived the remainder of his life. He loved living at the Care Center where he was treated like family and often said “This is a good place, it’s quiet, everybody is nice. I’ve got a nice room, a bed, and three squares a day. What more could you want?”

Matt is preceded in death by his parents Josephine and Michele, his brothers Tony, Frank, Mike, and Sam, his wife Norma and special friend Elaine. He is survived by his sister Jeanne Senuta, daughters Joette (Steve) and Michele (Jimi) and many nieces and nephews. To say he will be missed is an understatement. He was a big part of the greatest generation. He will always be known as a hero for our country and to his family.

TRIBUTES

Josette: So sorry to hear of the passing of your father -- one of the Greatest Generation for sure. You were a wonderful daughter to him. We're glad he could come and live with you in Moab for a time. May he rest in peace.
- Bill and Katie Stevens

Joette, We are sorry for the passing of your Father. We appreciate his service to our country. He must have shared many great traits with you. Thanks for leading our community with energy and compassion.
- David Olsen

Never met him - but wish I could have! Sound like one heck of a life. I read his obituary in my hometown paper (Olean, NY) and that led me here. Condolences to the family - he was (sadly) one of the last of the Greatest Generation, but his family should be proud. Sounds like a true original.
- Josh Cradduck

Dear Joette and Steve, Jose and I send our condolences on the death of your father. Even though it may be "time" it is always so hard to lose a parent. I enjoyed hearing about the recent years you all shared in Moab and the loving care he received. Best to you both.
- Karla VanderZanden

Dear Joette and Sister, i knew your Dad from the Care Center and privileged to have given him a manicure, but no fussing really just a trim! Such a delightful man as you know and the void must be difficult. Blessings to you and other family and friends.Truly an American solider. Sincerely,
- Marlene Huckabay

My dear Matthew, It isn't every day that one meets someone who is not only a century plus in age but is also a highly decorated veteran. Thus we are honored that your daughter Mayor Joette introduced us to you at the Canyonlands Care Center not so long ago. Your obituary makes clear that you led an exceptional life. Condolences to Joette and other family members.
- Mike and Jean Binyon

What a wonderful human being who made such a difference in this world, risking his life repeatedly for hope for the betterment of so many others. And what a gem of a conversationalist! Joette & Steve, what a huge loss you and your whole family must be feeling. Thank you for providing the various opportunities for us to be in Matt's presence. He will always be a great spirit.
